Gallery 3P: Yoshida Eisho (aka Yoshida Unosuke)

Little is known about Yoshida Eisho (aka Yoshida Unosuke), the artist who created the portraits of Kabuki Actors in this gallery. These prints were published by Yoshida Eitaro of Tokyo beginning in 1914. They were issued in various series, with each series focused on performances at a specific Tokyo theater. The actors are portrayed in the plays and roles in which they appeared during the year of print production. These prints are notable for the special techniques used with many of them, techniques that were usually reserved for high-end print production such as what might be seen in surimono. These techniques include burnishing, gaufrage, and the application of metallic pigments. In addition, several prints make dramatic statements by expanding an element into the print margins. Full margins can be viewed by clicking on the images. Unfortunately, some print corners were damaged due to having been glued to acidic backing paper which also resulted in yellowing of the paper.
