Gallery 4C: Katsuhira Tokushi
Katsuhira Tokushi (1904-1971) was born into a family of farmers. He began as a doll carver, then took up print making after participating in a woodblock carving class in 1928. He is considered both a Sosaku Hanga artist and a representative of the Farmers Art Movement. Katushira produced several themed print series depicting rural life and customs, often in winter settings. Katsushira also produced a number of sets depicting the print making process, two which can be viewed in Gallery 1, as well as woodblock printed postcards, many which can be found in Gallery 9. Of note, sets of postcard sized prints were frequently produced both as collections of prints without postcard backs as well as prints with postcard backs. In some occasions, these prints were backed with blank backs in which case they are presented in this gallery. Ex Libris by the artist can be found in Gallery 12.
