Gallery 3O: Mizushima Nihofu

The images in this gallery represent woodblock illustrations by Mizushima Nihofu (Nihou)(1884-1958) from the book Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō  [Supplement] the Inland Sea (Tōkaidō gojūsan tusgi – Setonaikai) which was also written by the artist. The book was published in 1920 by Kanao Bunendo. The book included the twenty-nine color woodblock prints in this gallery as well as forty-nine monochrome woodblock prints. The woodblocks were printed by Nishimura Kumakichi. This series is considered to be the last major work of the sketch-tour genre, one exemplified by such artists as Utagawa Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai. The prints in this section were removed from a damaged book prior to their acquisition. A few of prints themselves suffered some damage including stains on a few prints and a tear in Futamiura.
